Ten years after the earthquake that struck Central Italy in 2016, the four ANCI regional councils of Lazio, Marche, Umbria and Abruzzo are promoting an important moment of institutional dialogue to review the reconstruction process and outline the prospects for development and revitalization of the territories affected by the earthquake. The event, titled “Centro Italia 2016–2026: the path of reconstruction”, will be held on Friday 6 November 2026, starting at 9:30 a.m., at the gym of the “Specchio del Tempo” school, in the Borgo di Arquata del Tronto, One of the symbols of the 2016 earthquake.
The initiative, organized jointly by ANCI Marche, ANCI Lazio, ANCI Umbria and ANCI Abruzzo, with the sponsorship of ANCI national, represents an opportunity to reflect on the achievements achieved, the remaining challenges, and the strategies necessary to accompany the economic, social, and demographic recovery of the affected communities. At the heart of the discussion is the crucial role of municipalities, regions, and national institutions in ensuring a reconstruction that does not only focus on buildings and infrastructure but also on the vitality and future of the territories.
The works, moderated by journalist Linda Cittadini, will open with the institutional greetings of Michele Franchi, Mayor of Arquata del Tronto, Marco Fioravanti, Mayor of Ascoli Piceno, President of ANCI Marche and President of the National Council of ANCI, and Fabio Salvi, President of the Province of Ascoli Piceno.
The first session, dedicated to the institutional framework for the recovery of the territories, will see the exchange of views between the Presidents of the four regional ANCI organizations involved: Marco Fioravanti for Marche, Daniele Sinibaldi, Mayor of Rieti and President of ANCI Lazio, Federico Gori, Mayor of Montecchio and President of ANCI Umbria, and Pierluigi Biondi, Mayor of Aquila and President of ANCI Abruzzo. This will be a moment of dialogue between the representatives of the municipalities to share experiences, priorities and proposals in a perspective of interregional collaboration.
The second session will involve representatives of the Regions, with interventions by Francesco Acquaroli, President of the Marche Region, Manuela Rinaldi, Councilor for Reconstruction Policies of the Lazio Region, Marco Marsilio, President of the Abruzzo Region, and Stefania Proietti, President of the Umbria Region. The program will continue with the contributions of Gaetano Manfredi, National President of ANCI, His Exc. Mons. Gianpiero Palmieri, Bishop of Ascoli Piceno, Maria Elena Perretti, Head of Advisory for the Public Administration Department of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, and Guido Castelli, Extraordinary Commissioner for the reconstruction of the 2016 Central Italy earthquake. For ANCI Lazio, participation in the initiative confirms the commitment to support the municipalities affected by the seismic events and to promote constant collaboration between the different institutional levels. Ten years after the earthquake, reconstruction still represents a central challenge for the future of local communities, which requires administrative continuity, investments, services, and policies capable of countering depopulation and enhancing the potential of the territories.
